Mussels anchor themselves to rocks and pilings with their "byssal threads," commonly known as the mussel's "beard."
Lightly broil Blue Mussels on the half shell, stuffed with seasoned bread crumb or marinated in lemon and fresh herbs. You may also steam them with butter, garlic, wine and fresh thyme for decidedly Mediterranean take.
Blue Mussels provide a good source of Vitamin C, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Foliate, Phosphorus and Zinc, and a very good source of protein, Vitamin B12, Iron, Manganese and Selenium.
