Two weeks ago we talked about Larry Olmsted’s book: Real Food, Fake Food, and how fraudulent seafood was stealing from us the joy of great tasting fresh seafood.
Last week we discussed all that cheap, imported (and bad tasting) seafood in your local supermarket and most restaurants, and how the system is rigged toward fraud and dishonesty (sometimes called creative marketing.) Again, the victim is you, your taste-buds, your health and the health of the world’s waterways.
This week, some good news. The DEC as part of their inspections covering the most heavily regulated seafood waters in the world (the 200 mile fishing zone around the U.S.) found two more cases of illegal seafood finding its way on shore. The first found too small lobsters being sold by a top 20 U.S. based grocer. The grocer blamed their supplier, but if they cannot protect themselves from a $100 per lobster fine, how will they make sure your seafood is legal…and safe? And who is paying for those fines anyway?
The second sees a formerly trusted supplier of canned tuna, formerly a U.S. company but now owned overseas, breaking their promise to fish tuna fairly without the use of FAD technology (akin to hunting deer from the bed of a pickup, with a spotlight….mostly illegal, always unsporting.)
Trust. It’s a funny thing. Consumers have tried to place their trust in many different authorities - from retailers, to food companies, to government “pyramids”, to medical agencies. They then find out that natural is not organic, cage-free is not pasture-raised, grass-fed may not be grass-finished and that their white tuna sushi is most often stomach wrenching escolar and Red Lobster’s lobster bisque…contains no lobster. More folks are concerned with their health, their kids’ health, their parents’ health and so are self-determining and directing the products and the food selections they are going to pursue.
That self direction is a tall order, with so many special interests “interpreting facts” in favor of their products. Four facts stand out and remain rock solid trustworthy:
1. Seafood is the healthiest source of protein, significantly impacting the reduction of cardiovascular disease (by 36%) and dementia related disease (by 51% when combined with a MIND diet) and other ailments.
2. Safe, sustainable and above all FRESH seafood is breathtakingly delicious. Most of the country has never actually experienced FRESH seafood, hours out of the water.
3. The freshest, most highly regulated, most sustainable and safest seafood in the world is fished in the 200 mile fishing zone around the U.S. Today over 70% of this seafood is sent overseas to the very countries which send their product over here, largely uninspected, to meet inexpensive price points.
4. FultonFishMarket.com carefully selects its seafood from the millions of pounds that cross the docks at the busiest and largest seafood market outside of Japan. Almost all of the product offered on our consumer site is expertly picked from product fished here from the U.S. We do make exceptions of the few exceptionally tasting products, carefully vetted for sustainability, safety and environment.
Finally, you have a seafood source in FultonFishMarket.com that provides fabulous taste, not experienced by most of us. You have a source in FultonFishMarket.com that guarantees you are getting what you selected, that it is sustainable for the oceans and the American fisheries and that it is safe.
