Found from Florida throughout the northern Gulf to the Texas coast. When young, Shrimp live in marshes and estuaries which provide food and shelter. They later migrate to deeper, saltier water, traveling at night and hiding in the bottom during the day.

Commercial fishermen have been harvesting shrimp in the Gulf since the early 1800s. Shrimp migrate between coastal estuaries and offshore waters during their life cycle and are harvested in both areas. Through this migration, they cross boundaries between state and federal waters.
